We dressed the pages with the weave of us
Then undid the bindings so the colors didn’t bleed
Hers moiré and indigo that changed when you turned your eye
Mine of cotton and green I stole from the bed of a river I traveled
Before the words turned gravel and the floods came

She clipped old keys and parts of letters
Then layered on the page with pictures saved from some other age
As she tied ribbons to bows before underlining some words
That described the way her face held bedroom eyes or the scars
She dreamed she owned in other lives

I sprinkled water shine on mine
Then bound half phrases I kept when the sunrise didn’t bring warm
Or the burned out ends of wishes smoked too long
And added shells and stones I had caressed with fingertips
As I sat along the margins of dreams collecting days to play again

In the end she let me unwrap her pages and sift with my eyes
The patterns she left impressed on sheets
As she recited bits of verse not included for fear they were too complete
Or that age would not treat them kind
Should the images as whole be captured in corner of lens

She told later that when it came her turn to look
The knots I’d tied would not come undone despite her try
And she felt helpless as she wanted to see what was inside
But had instead resigned herself to the colors and would let me
Describe the details she couldn’t see

When she had to go find another volume to decorate with memories
And the dreams she hadn’t already saved in some other pages
She left the book with me saying it was better I hold on to it now
But maybe she’d come back to see it again if she figured out how

And if I was still interested in Indigo and the way she wore silk
