I pulled into the Stewart’s about an hour before sunset
And as I was backing the truck up to the trailer
Meg was on her way down the drive carrying a slip of paper
That she waved at me smiling in her open faced way
That made me think how lucky Bob was to have found himself
A woman like her to settle down with
And about how she filled out the shirt she wore in a way
That would draw a man’s eye in an appreciative way
Without making him leer
Or think less of who she was or forget that she was married

“You made it back I see,” she said and extended the slip of paper
“It’s for you, a message from the folks who bought the Cauldset place.”
“They moved in 3 years ago, and he admitted he didn’t know you
But had heard you might be interested in some work.” She continued
With her dark eyes dancing in some sort of amusement
That I didn’t quite understand
“The phone number is on the paper, or you can leave the trailer
And drive over to see them if you’d prefer” She offered in that way
That people who would prefer you go see, do when they want to lead you
Rather than you to just make a call.

"Drop back in when you're through" she said
"you can join us for dinner if you like"

“Thanks” I answered.
“I’ll take you up on leaving the trailer and we'll see how late I am
after I run over that way
To see what he has in mind” I continued wondering why the smile
And amused eyes worried me like they did.
I crawled back into the seat and turned the key
And sat for a moment listening to the slight tick of a lifter
Not yet warmed up and harboring a warning of sorts that
I was going to have to do some work on the truck or break down
And trade the old horse in on something else

But I was glad it made me pause
Because the sight of Meg walking back to the house
And the way her hips moved with an easy grace
Was worth the wait

I shook my head and grinned, thinking
“A man can look can’t he?”
And let my hand fall on the leather journal that lay on the seat
Softly running the well worn texture under the light touch of fingertips
“Besides”, I said to no one and myself at the same time
“ I’ve got some reading to do and she’s married”
………………………………………………………………….
People who bought the Cauldset place turned out to be named Turner
And we came to terms that I’d do some hauling for him and let the first trip
Decide if we wanted to continue on with the deal
When I left them standing in the drive
They waved
And I thought of all the times I’d left
Seen someone wave
And never waved back for fear I’d reveal too much
Of what I hated about leaving

Totally captivating, dear Cpat! A great story told with fine psychological nuances.

Ms Margherita
Glad there was something in this ramble you enjoyed.. I admit this is a transition piece of the puzzle... the story and only a device so it hold less poetic imagery and less value perhaps than what hopefully will write itself next...

your kind eyes and words...are greatly appreciate ma'am..
thank you

Wonderful.. this celebrates the human condition in your colloquial way, Cpat.. I especially liked the lifter ticking, a little ominous, maybe? And I appreciated the leather journal.. which is so familiar to anyone in love with writing.. another gem, here
