I thought I caught it one day
from that special river of soul
where honesty forms a channel
and truth a solid base.

Lo and behold, an about-face
and the choice for a time of the mighty sea
until, as would happen, it became snared
on the line of the world’s many lies.

It landed then and sought to be free
until it knew that would never be
and so it travelled back, further back,
in search of a woman like me.

But I was gone from that river of soul
because no honesty in an about-face
that leaves the base dry and o’er laid
with layers and layers of falsities.

It happens that way when we turn away
from one who fishes in rivers of soul
but pity the “it” now joined and entwined
with the world’s unaccountable lies.

If asked today I’d certainly say,
“Don’t fish in the rivers of soul
because sooner or later all you will catch
is an infectious virus of lies!"

Deep. An enjoyed read.

Thoughts arise of Moby Dick, and Ahab's "inscrutable thing" that "maws" humankind in this world. The word "skein" appears---to describe the worldly lies you speak of. And the notion that it is unwise to pity the dolphin in the net, but not the dolphin in the sea, is profound.

I love this thought, dear Helen. Searching the "rivers of soul", as you say so beautifully, can only lead to clarity in my opinion ... if it does not, it means the soul has not been found at all.

Love and hugs.

Dear Helen, I've never caught sole in a river, but I have caught it in the ocean of deepness and understanding.

This was really well written!

Hi Helen...I have fished in that heartbreak river before and found the only soul to hold on to, is my own.

Thank you all so much for your comments.  I appreciate them very much - and Martie, you are so right but sometimes when the cold winds blow my grip loosens on that elusive thing called "soul".

Sometimes when we think of `the one that got away`.. we are secretly glad     Thankfully there are other, healthier fish in the sea..(or river, as it were).. much enjoyed!
