Whispers

What are whispers?
What do whispers do?

Barely a breath expelled yet oaths and secrets are hard to keep if yelled.

They are the vespers of young love shared between furtive glances and stolen kisses.
A message passed with a breath warming the cheek like the summer wind while sending simultaneous chills down the spine. They hold the power to excite, enthrall, and thrill.

Hardly a sound at all, but often carrying words meant to be recalled.

The mournful mute cry of a widow calling her prayers out for her dearly departed dead in a voice as light as a wisp of a willow. Soft soothing words passed to the grieving meant to stifle their sorrow. They calm, comfort, and still.

Unspeakable thoughts expressed rendered nearly inaudible by fear and duress.

A tool of the sinister that spread sharp lies with soft words. Through deceit, truth is often obscured by the gentle tone of conspirators as they confer. They grant fruition of plans, plots, and schemes of ill.

Gentle murmurs voicing what must be said, even if it is regarding lessons we dread.

The means of the mentor who challenges us to see what we could not before. Encouraging, prodding, and guiding us towards greater meaning through a lesser manner. They provoke, temper, and challenge our will.

Whispers sooth, whispers mock, whispers promise, whispers lie, whispers love, whispers kill.
Whispers are human. For what is man if he is not a whisper of the earth?

A fine write and a good read. LOL, the best poems are like a well-composed game and this certainly qualifies imho.

I cannot help but to recall the biblical "still, small voice", thought of which reminds me that along with being a "whisper of the earth" (wonderful metaphor, btw), we are also momentary sojourners in this world.
