I let the river whisper the two names
Of girls we never had and turned my ears
Towards the soft rustling of their vowels
Imagining as I lay how they might have smiled
To play along her edges collecting shells and stone
Or observing how the minnows darted in and out of cover
But could be coaxed with small cracker crumbs
Into shallow pools they dug in sand

She laughed too
Beneath her bed where words lay
Gathered in the moss and rock to wait for moments
When the half turned head of those who hear
Allowed them to murmur laughter or speak softly
With the verbs that moved to a slower understanding
Of what might have been
In a once upon a time

Sun drenched bars stretched lazily at noon
And covered their skin with cool shadows when the sun
Had found three quarter sky not enough
To peer over the tops of hills that line her way

There I closed my eyes and watched
As crawfish hidden under stones were revealed
To the giggle of curls and the wide eyed curious skin
Turned a nutmeg tone from being exposed
To afternoon along the waters edge

Before evening came and a fire was built
So that we could sit and tell the days stories
As we waited for the stars to shine that we might count to numbers more
Some ancient constellations points before
Building legends of our own about how they came to be
And why they lasted now this
Eternity
After having been born of dust and love
We might never understand

I listened closer then
To hear the soft sound of your name
And began to dream
Of how your own eyes watched carefully their moves
And smiled as they found wonder in the world
On sunny afternoons spent simply

I turned
And felt the soft of the you not there move under my palm
As those eyes found another place to rest
with you painting the colors of sighs
In the hues of sun washed stone
Translating the whisper of her
Into our bed

Come now
and the owl sings its hooting call
Looking for a mate within the dark tangle of trees
And I averted my eyes from stream
Letting go of names I would never speak

It came too
Time to sleep

"The saddest words of tongue and pen..." but you feather them well here, and light, and moss, and gentle babble of flowing watercourse, on its way to the sea. An enjoyed read.

I always enjoy your stories

they put me in a poetic mood

and for some reason, I am missing the days when my little girls played on the beach

MS Kat,
thank you for the eyes on this and for the kind words..
there has been a river in my life always..or so it seems... and I have spent a good many hours along the banks or on the skin of several..
glad these meager words could take you there
