Tarnished this sky
A mottled madness of greys and greens
It glowers an almost sigh to the day
As it threatens to turn the landscape
Into winter shades of pale

If I close my eyes and let dream
I can picture how it might be
A fire to warm chilled hands
A hot mug to hold as words were spanned
Between the divided lips in an architecture
Laced with curved vowels to hold straight
Lines of thought to each
Just as our finger might twine
Joining the bones and flesh in an interlocking hold
Tender of the way too hard and we bruise
Too little
We slip and fall
Bringing down the girders and trusses
As have underpinned these verbs

Could I pull some magic cloth from drawer
To polish the shine of sky
I might see the silver of such linings fairy tales told
But I am too human for so much hope
As leaves one drunk or wandering lost
And instead look for the swirl of clouds
And wait for snow
To carry my thoughts along the gentle path
Of how you’d feel next to me
Speaking soft tones
The touch of fingers to cheek

Engraved upon the face of this day
Are filigrees and the soft arc of lines
Bending my thoughts into a pattern not to be found
In some hidden attic where grandchildren play
But in the treasured pieces of sterling

Memories
  I have of you

I know how you are about compliments...

Suffice to say, I appreciate the
imagery and how you make words appear
in person.

How about if I just say, "I kept it."

Thank you for the gift.
