What can I say about my father?
I learned too early that he was human
I learned too early to judge him.
I was only eight, too young to know about
addiction or alcohol.

I learned early and I held him responsible for
the end of my childhood.
Now as an adult I look back and see differently.
I see a man, who made mistakes and did his
best to make up for them.

I see that unforgiving child, who only hurt herself
by holding on to her hurts.
Too late, I told him all my feelings.
Too late, because he was gone and all I could
do was sit by his grave and cry.

Too early and too late, the story of my life

youth doesn't provide us with a very wide view, or a lot of ways to base our feelings other than the immediate...the hurt, or the joy.

One of the things about being human is that we often come to understanding when we think it is too late... not sure that is entirely true, if we come to understand, then we at least understand and don't continue in ignorance. That we have regrets we didn't understand sooner? I think most anyone who thinks, regrets they didn't "get" things quicker..and sometimes, we have to learn to live with it.

sorry~~ I'm rambling...
touching piece...  obviously it made me think...

An appreciated write.

I hesitate to use the word "catharsis" (from the Greek "katharos" = pure, not from late Latin & old Germanic/English "cattus" = cat), but the image described here of the author crying by her Father's graveside is a powerful one.

You're quite right, it was very cathartic. A friend recommended that I write a letter with all the things I wanted to say and read it aloud.  A lot of very bad feelings were gone after that day.
