A glimpse from the periphery,
a tendrilled wisp of smoke.
Words echoing quite hauntingly
the caterpillar spoke
in cryptic words and obscure rhyme
of visitors from other times
inspired to write of visions found
on edge of sight and verge of sound.

The music of his words to waft
in silken tongue through scented breeze
and carry fancy set aloft
with no more thought than scattered leaves
just this would he have answered true,
of much import, it's "Who are you?"

To which I answer haltingly,
"I am, of course, but what you see,
t'was you who slipped inside my head,
a figment from some book I've read."

"Come now, dear boy don't be obtuse,
you surely know you're not a moose
and yet, you say you're what I see
so, moose you are, decidedly."
"It's that or I should quit this stuff."
He said, but took another puff.
"You say I slipped inside your head,
that wasn't in the book I read."

" Indeed my friend, you're all in there,
the product of a mind impaired
by rampant creativity
and mental instability,
shared traits with some of those it's said
who've penned some of the works I've read."

Such are the things of which we spoke,
peripherally, through the smoke.

Cpat,
Thank you. There are so many memorable characters from so many classic tales running around in there it's a pleasure to interact with some of them once in a while, lol. Glad you enjoyed.

Ida,
Thank you, that's very nice of you to say. Some of my off-beat musings are probably better off never finding their way into print, but some just seem to find their own way despite all my efforts, lol.
