I found the bleached skull of mouse
Beneath the azaleas planted as they are
In straight and narrow row to define the boundaries
And buried it quickly in a shallow hole
Before the clouds should see and come so low
That they devoured the late bloom of Lilies
Or I forgot that facing it west might bring thunder.

Smoothing the earth with fingers I felt a stone
And remembered the smooth of river’s bones
That too had bleached in sun till white
And always felt warm beneath bare feet
When the month of heat came to own the sky.
Archaically I longed to travel her lengths
Again with slow crowning eye and quiet heart.

She still runs among the hills.
But, I have not seen her nor felt her close
And my bones croon a soft chant in call for her.
As once, when the journey was young,
She filled me with an abandon that left me numb
And the marrow of my soul was reborn
Among the white oak and sycamore paths
Where I followed once to meet her.

But my shins have forgotten how the brambles pulled
With sharp thick thorn at skin.
I have forgotten how to bleed and be washed clean
In the depths and currents that came
With the lay of her closer than the moon’s passing
Or how she felt when over me.

The fire bush murmured softly to me
So I quickly brushed the earth to conceal
The shallow resting place then glanced above
To see if the clouds had yet discovered.

They remained in steady file and ponderously
Moved towards the south without a sound
Deigning not to look below, as yet the sky was new.
So I stepped away from their shadow and the damp

Then thought of her again
And wondered at the passing years and all the
Murmured songs still sung among the willow ends
And could but bow my head

To love
        and dreams

Such a path you take me on, especially as I've been picking wild raspberries and had forgotten to take measures against the thorns--too eager for the fruits of labor, I guess!  Like the layering of this...

A pleasure to read,
