Cat Envy

We found her
at a small pet shop
in, Hanford.

Nothing special.

A charcoal gray kitten
that we later named
Emily.

The cat gained her love
without earning it,
much like I did.

Emily,
was a birthday gift,
the best one I gave.

I wander
if she keeps the cat
like a souvenir,

a reminder
of what has been

and what again
will never be.

That is,
if she thinks of me
at all.

Six years later,
the cat she still loves.

Six years later,
can't say that for me.

Six years later,
her phone rings
unexpectedly.

It was a good talk,
but words don't change things
like years and youth.

And I could hear that purr
through the phone
from that cat,

the cat she still loves,
but not me,
and that's that.

Sweet poem.

I couldn't help but smile a bit, knowing cats as I do, that "Emily" probably keeps her human around like a souvenir.

That's how it is with cats.

Nicely penned Joe, it sounds like the cat fell on it's feet with your lovely ex-lady.

Don't loose hope, who knows what's around the corner. Good luck.

Ouch!
Amazing how people can love pets...

"The cat gained her love
without earning it,
much like I did."

Lovely! (That' how love should be gained, no?)

"the best one I gave"

She may love the cat but she will never forget who gave her the cat.

At first I thought this was going to be a light and easy piece of reading... but it turned into so much more. Well done. As for cats, they require so little when it comes to maintaining a relationship. Can't say the same for us humans.

Oh!

The cat is the keeper of secrets and memories and "she" benefits from the closeness and you, you see, you can't help but remembering too ... even if things have changed since.

Very nice.

Love,
Margherita
