I heard a whisper as the wind,
blew 'cross the Kansas prairie,
I stopped to listen on Rayl's hill,
From my journey I would tarry.

I fear the words I could not glean,
The wind spoke O' so light,
And so my sojourn I did end,
As came the soothe of night.

Soon I left the open field,
To return to hearth and home,
I stopped and faced back to Rayl's hill,
In calm of twilight's gloam.

I heard the whisper of the wind,
as stars commenced to shine,
Caring not what words were spoken,
in thrall of vespertine.
