One by one, they stand primly at the roadside, in all their summer colors:
pink, fuchsia, lavender, purple, white, and red
Without a breeze, they stand so still, their pendant plumes so full,
but when the breeze comes, they nod their heads gracefully, so many
yeses, never saying no.
The younger ones hold their heads upright, their plumes not so full.
As they age, their plumes get larger and longer  and fuller.
Once a Southern Belle has passed a "certain age" she once again holds
her head up high, standing erect and proudly displaying her panicles.
Her age is showing in her petticoats though, if you look at her trunk.
Long thn strips of bark hang like un-gartered stockings on old legs.
When the rain comes, their plumes come apart, showering everyone and
everything with dainty drops of color.
Walking under her limbs, you will find you have flowers in your hair.
When winter comes, all you will see is her bones, bare and smooth as silk.
But in summer, the Southern Belles are in their glory.

If you live in the south, especially Alabama and Georgia, you may recognize the crepe myrtles.

I can really see them, these Southern Belles, spilling all their generous colors out of your poem. You have spoken to me of "a life other than mine." A delight to read.

A beautiful poem about beautiful flowering trees and other wildflowers, Southern belles, and the aging process.

I already notice the days getting shorter... and it's only early July!

Loved this.

I've often thought that when we get that sudden heat wave, and they drop their petals, it is as if the earth herself blushes.

Refreshing as sweet tea...

Man I just got to get me to the south!!!
