“You’re brooding” he said, as he appeared behind my chair
and looked down at the open book on my lap
“Bullfinch… bull!” he grumbled
“It’s enough to make anyone brood”

“I turned and looked into the depths of dark eyes
that looked older than they had this morning
“Tough bit of business I suppose” I said

He came round and sat in the chair opposite mine
Exhaling in such a way as to remind me
Of the winter’s wind cold in bare branches

“Some ask how if there is a God there can also be so much evil in the world”
he began without looking at me but instead staring at the cover of the book
“People  have a strange idea of God, and an odd sense of death and evil”

I was curious, and asked “If God is as portrayed such a loving being”
“Why would he allow such suffering/”
Is that the question? I prodded gently

“Bah!!” he grunted and I saw that his eyes turned for an instant to me
“Like Bulfinch… Bull!”
“Every thing  has its balance, its counterpoint and without it there is chaos”
“This all fearing and great and gentle God described in the old book
does not touch the truth as much as it placates the political will of would be popes”

“I have a reason, a purpose, and at times, the purpose is to balance
not to worry that ‘fair’ or that the ‘innocent’ be given some special bye”
His hands reached for the book upon my lap
Then with vehemence he tossed it upon the ash

“the myths you seek to find are not in there, and you know it”
he sighed and I saw the fire and subject were closed off inside
and he seemed to shrink into his own set of memories

“Do you remember the desert and caravans?” he asked me in time
and I saw his eyes had returned to something an almost sad kind

I closed my eyes…

She came to me as does the scent of rose upon a hot dry night
When one drinks the scent letting the oils that waft upon the air
Coat the tongue and the heart with memories of taste

“please” she said in a small voice as her small hands reached to touch my arm
“please” ~ and lowered her eyes
“I do not like when you leave, and I do not like the alone
of not knowing if the sands have eaten your flesh
and the sun bleaches your bones”

she straightened

“I would go with you, and if you perish, so will I”

“Yes,” I answered him, “I do remember something of the time”

“Then you know” he offered in a soft voice
“the myths you made and can trace them on a map before you can spell
the stories they contain”

I nodded

Feeling her in my arms and seeing the routes taken
To Cathay and across sands that like the love I have for her

Never seems to end

Thanks Belle.... the more I look at these the less fond I am of the series as a whole..  but I rarely go back and visit once I have written, so I suppose I should expect the reaction I have..

Eldest, thank for your eyes and kind words.
here are others in the series, some I simply can not post due to content, but there are one or two more to come perhaps.
