Old man Macowicz had a load of steers to move
And Iambe was still trying to straighten out Billie’s old Ford
So I hitched up the old trailer and headed out for the flats

It’s odd the way the horizons out here never get closer
While in the hill country, you can’t find a horizon unless you
Are sitting on top of  those hills looking past the scrub cedar and sage
Gives a man a lot of time to think either way
And I had driven enough to know that my thoughts always found a way
To get back around to Iambe and the things I always thought I needed
Just like the horizon, they never got any closer it seemed

Iambe and I had run into town last night
Picked up a couple of steaks and 12 pack then grilled them slow
Over some mequite while we sipped the sunset and what little breeze we could find
We didn’t talk a lot, but then again
She never was much on explaining things or digging into
What was on some else’s mind

She told me old man George had finally died, that ancient Dodge killed him
When he tried to ford the dry wash during a spring rain
And it decided to try being a boat, only there was so many holes
In the floor board that it sank before getting past the twisted oak
That stands right there on the bend with the big bank above
She said they found when the water went down
And buried him the following Monday up at Crestwood

I told her that just below Rogers I’d busted an axle
And spent a while getting parts and had thought of her
Telling me how I was a danged fool to think I could handle a wrench
But somehow, I had managed through and gotten it fixed anyway
Even though I busted my right hand pretty good when the brake drum
Tipped over and I tried to catch it
If she could, I’d appreciate her looking it over sometime to see
If I had left anything
undone

Years and miles leave rust and some wear on a person
Seemed to me old George knew better than to try that crossing
He wasn’t so old or rusty that he didn’t know how the water raged
And that old Dodge not so worn out it couldn’t have gone around
Up Greco’s way where they put in the bridge

But then again, I probably knew better than to let Iambe
Think I needed her and let her
Drown me too

~love the narrative...the way it grips your reader and doesn't want to let go until the last syllable is spun~*~

Thanks Belle... your eyes are always a gift on anything I might scribble...

as for narratives... heck, I just scribble down the conversations I hear inside my head..  doing any real writing would be way beyond me...

old Dodges and old dogs...a fellow has to have them in his mind belly to wear a work shirt that will fit him right.

Fix what you can...
rely on strangers
and lovers
to fix the rest for you.

Smiling at the many memories
Iambe brings me.
