I can still remember
My mother's gentle touch
Her love was never ending
Things were never tough

I think I was her favorite
She never knew "what's next?"
Though I gave her fits
I always showed respect.

My mother was always there for me,
As I am for my kids too,
They grow up so very quickly
The years are very few.

My dad wrote alot of poetry and had one great sense of humor. He wrote this to my son, (his grandson)...my son was about 5 yrs old.

When your dad was a little boy,
He had some unusual pets.
He'd bring them home in cardboard boxes,
Old tin cans and nets.

There were lizards, guppies, June bugs,
Snakes and birds and dogs,
And "Granny" wasn't too happy
When tadpoles turned to frogs.

A turtle that vomited, he wanted to buy,
And once he tamed a butterfly,
To sit and flutter on his finger,
While we all wondered why it would linger.

Just wait and see if your Dad giggles
When you bring home something that wiggles.

This poem rings true for me as it sounds like me what with all the creatures that I would bring home.  And like you said the years have gone.  Oh how I wish that I could bring them back.

You DO have a sweet side. I once brought home a snake and took it to school in a pencil bag, but it got out and got away.  I never told the teacher about it, but I'm sure she found it at some point.

Dear Toerag, I am always so moved when I read words written for a Mother. And your tender words had the same effect, they brought a tear.

And your Dad's poem is so very lovely too.

Enjoyed both your offerings very much.

Love,
M

Toe are not Mothers just the best, The things they have to put up with when their

kids are small but they usually do it with a smile on their face. I loved your poem.

Looks like the "Toe" didn't fall far from the "Foot." This made me smile as I remember all the horrible things my son used to bring me, and I'd squirm trying to be the "Mother" he expected me to be.  To this day, I hate worms, bugs, and especially anything from a pond that is covered in slime.   Loved this!

I can see where you get your talent from. You are an acorn among oaks.

A poet must leave traces of his passing not proof.

That was awesome Toe, I bet Little Toe, is going to be filling his dad's shoes in no time...

You are a very lucky man, as are we, for knowing thee!

How could you NOT be her favorite? *S* I'm betting your parents perfected the art of keeping a straight face as they dished out a bit of discipline while they fought the urge to bust a gut laughing at your antics. *G* Only you would find a vomiting turtle and want to give it a home. LOL

This is terrific, sweets... funny and tender and completely heartwarming! *S*

The things we collect as children with such acceptance and interest!  The memories takes us back, but sometimes with different respsonses.  I think of the grasshoppers I used to catch in my hands for the handman to used for fish bait.  I don't know that he ever really did use them for that, but my skin crawls just thinking about holding onto a grashopper now or them jumping into my h air...and that ugly brown liquid they left in my palms. We were fascinated by garden snakes, too, until I saw a huge black bull snake one day.

....a poem suiting childhood and innocence.  Loved it!  ~Karen
