As Blue

Standing on the cliff
the waves leaped toward me
like cotton candy
on a trampoline
licking at land, turning rocks,
into sand.

A clam observed me
for a second
before disappearing,
into the froth.

I couldn’t see him then
but I know he was watching me
from beneath,
waiting for me to stop staring
into his littleneck
of the woods.

My eyes misting
the forest for the seas.

One of your waves to me hit the jetty
finishing its journey,
wetting my face with parted lips,
from afar.

I looked down at my shoes
they were soaking dry,
but they still
were drowning.

I saw something blue,
and picked it up.

It was a balloon,
crawling out to the deep..

Maybe it was trying
to get to an anniversary picnic,
or a child’s first birthday party?

Or maybe,
like most things washed up on shore
as much as it wanted,
it never really had a home
to begin with.

Funny how high we can fly
and other times
find ourselves at the edge
of a gleam
laying on our side
in a pool full of tide
of never
and dreams.

I kissed the balloon,
filling its lungs
with moment.

A moment
I once held
within
thinking of you,
that was now enclosed
in its own world
of secrets and truths
that never had the chance
to be cherished
or proved.

A part of me
that I had merely borrowed
from nowhere
and, everywhere
in the form of a breath
I tried not to exhale
that sustained me
for an eon, of brief
and last
wish.

That now
was put away
for a lasting wink perhaps
or, a final sigh.

I tied the balloon’s lips
into a knot
with some sting,
from my shirt.

Strings from a fabric of rhyme
that was once stretched
against hopes of distance
and time.

Strings from cloth
that once pressed
on my heart
soaked from beginnings
that never,
did start.

Tied to that string
was a note
on a ring.

Looking for you
of what might have been

A final flight
of finish and light.

Now with the sky
as blue
as your eyes.

Richy you certainly have a vivid imagination

and the ability to put it down on paper.
Well done my friend.

Love the way you play with words and emotions, Richy.  That balloon could be like a message in a bottle...only it can fly as well as float. Happy Bday and father's day...and first day of summer!

Eldest - Did I say that? I meant shoes that are drying wet... curses!

Yes Martie, you're right! I hadn't thought about it having both modes of travel?

Thanks so much dear friend for all of the happy greetings.

Giant hugs to you!
