standing on a shadow's lace

Macon Drive

humid hot Memphis lightening nights
twelve strings strummed to my heart
I fell in love with Mickey Newbury’s
Mabel Joy in the honey comfort of
your voice like the unchained melody
an after dinner southern porch sitting
listening to you play and sing as darkness
dripped hypnotized to the flames of your face
at times it found us lounging on washers
drinking beer from thin brown glass bottles
as quarters clacked in all night dryers
dixie nineteen and a Mississippi dream
a colorful black and white photograph
I never even knew it would be just a memory
happy never lets you see the other street side
for I slept secure in clean white cotton sheets
and Macon Drive’s prince charming lay on the
left side of the bed and read Uncle Remus stories
in character to me every night as I drifted off
when he wasn’t with his other lover,    music
still to this day the most romantic thing ever
until you had to go west and left Memphis and me
behind to make music and your mark on a world tour
you settled west in Colorado where you wrote
saying, “ come west take the bus it’s cheaper”

"I'm so hard to handle
I'm selfish and I'm sad."
— Joni Mitchell

to Robert Bosdorf
and the good people of Alamosa
who now hold his heart

when it is late at night
and rain drips on the panes
i think of you singing
willis allen ramsey's
"angel eyes"

you paint a vivid picture...and you show a lot of heart..
just as I remember...your way with words.

Helen, this is just soo deep and beautiful.

These words they echo in my mind, read by a delicate yet determined voice slathered in the southern syrup of molasses colored eyes and moonshine melodies.

I only wish this was the opening paragraph to a whole book of you. Helen of Joy, A Heart That Launched a Thousand Skips.
