Working in the garden this morning,
I noticed something the cat was chasing,
I walked over and shooed "Midnight" away,
saving this creature from the doom it was facing.

I got it out of danger's path, after
an hour of coaching, it took flight!

It sure was a far better experience
than the creature I came across last night.

I think this is a black snake, not poisonous, but I couldn't see what kind it was in the dusk's light. Over 5 feet long.
Poor guy, at the wrong end of Pops' 12 gauge.

Awww, the poor little bird. I have three cats, now and then they'll be out there with a bird in their mouths and I have to smack it out of their face lol, not hard mind you, but hard enough to let the poor thing go. I've saved quite a few in my day... I wonder how many didn't get away when I wasn't there?

Good grief thats a big snake!

Be careful Dixie! So nice to read you again!!

Yo dear Passing shadows,

It looks like a Black Snake to me.  They are very valuable, as they eat a lot of rodents.

Now you'll be over run by mice.

Love Bobby

I have no cats... but my dog hunts lizards. I've saved a few on account they eat the black widows. As for that snake, I think the shotgun was best given lack of light. Brings to mind the time a very lengthy gopher snake made his way into our house. I had to relocate his slitheriness to a field yonder. Gophers digging up the yard have been an issue ever since.

Oh my! I`d stick to mornings, too! Wonderful pics.. my children brought in a baby robin they thought was `hurt`.. they thought it`d fallen from it`s nest.. the momma kept flying around chirping for it, so they brought it back outside & set it on the lawn.. where it`s momma joined it, and within 10 minutes it was flying!  =)  Great lesson for the kids..!  =)  Thanks for sharing this today!

ps, PassingShadows:
Your snake piccy sparked a poem for me; it`s under my `Just Be` thread in the piptalk Lounge.. it`s the 5th poem down.  I did credit you!   Thanks for all the inspiring photos!

thanks guys

glad you enjoyed this little experience poem

heck, I can deal with mice and gophers and moles...I can't deal with snakes.

Last year we planted castor bean plants....very pretty once they are big and we had no trouble from digging furballs.
