How to Hug a Child
.
.
Take
your hands from the
steaming water,
chapped and swollen; dry them
on the towel-
.
Remove
the phone from it`s
sometimes home,
your aching shoulder-
.
Listen
to the cries
like newborn kits
behind you now-
.
Turn-
bend and
become smaller,
(you may sigh)
.
Open
work-weary arms
to him
and close your eyes-
.
Feel
the small warm body
snuggle close,
Hold tight-
.
Breathe
the trust that emanates,
the safety,
calm-
.
Let him remind you now:
Tomorrow comes.
.
My own, my own- I know
tomorrow comes.

A good read. Recalls to mind how important not only trust, but also forbearance is.

My grand kids are an extension of me.  I now  get to be the grandmother that loves them, feels them sugar, and then sends them home.  It's payback time!  They keep me young, strong, and forever thinking of magical things.

Love them hard, for too soon do they grow.

Very tender and wise too. Beautiful invitation.

Hugs are indeed such an important part in a child's life. There are still too many who lack love and warmth.

Thank you for this, dear Amaryllis.

Love,
Margherita

Many, many thanks, everyone..!
.
This poem was born from an idea for a `How-to` poem,  from `The Poet`s Companion` by Kim Addonizio and Dorianne Laux.. an excellent book; I highly recommend it!

Excellent poem, full of emotion without being preachy.

A poet must leave traces of his passing not proof.

This poem is a real jewel, whole and complete in itself. So much so that I don't know what I can add. Bravo!
