A Soldier Never Cries

My gun was aimed upon his chest
My eyes fixed on his face
My heart was open to his heart
And held him in embrace
My grief engraving moments in a frozen time and place

I meant to say I’m sorry
He saw it in my eyes
He seemed to say I understand
And a soldier never lies
And I disspelled the notion that “a soldier never cries”

He went to lift his gun at me,
But he was out of time
His life was just about to end
Before this gun of mine
And in his face a portrait of a family filled my mind

And I could just imagine
When I come home from Iraq
A hero’s welcome in my town
A firm pat on the back
But I would give my life if I could only bring him back

They say that all is fair in war,
But war’s a travesty
It was not fair that he should die
And I, still walking free
Still burying my soul in shame, my heart in misery

Now many years have passed
And time can heal a grieving heart
But I have never left that soldier
From the very start
We are the best of friends for we have never been apart

In those tremendous moments when it's either you or me probably there is not even the time to ponder, but afterwards a sensitive heart will always relive the scene and never forget.
You put this into very poignant words, dear Elizabeth. If only nobody in the world should ever again cope with such situations!
Love and peace.

War, in all its horror, reflects all of human experience.  Well written.

Wonderful writing, Elizabeth.
Perhaps no one ever forgets their personal hero.  and that's a good thing!
