Sizzle

it has been a buttermilk day
hot enough for cornbread
resting quietly in bacon grease
to cook without mamaw’s oven
thunder rolls across the cornfield
and tomatoes find no blush yet
to call and tempt the raindrops over
so the sultry dances in the dust
across the air plays an iron lullaby
as boxcars do the twist on a Sunday
such is the passion of the south
scorching you, leaving its mark

excellent imagery ... perfectly capturing what will eventually be the unfortunate long-term
norm (rather than the exception) via relentless present and future effects of global warming.

You create the mood so perfectly, and your messages are hard to miss.

I am not only there, I am feeling the sting!

Another atmospheric offering.. I do love the way you write, felt the sultry day, saw the impending storm.. just wonderful. Thanks for sharing it.. such a welcome departure from our soggy, mossy Pacific Northwest!   :)

The compliment and counterpoint of senses and feelings make this very special.

Oh, I thought we just had this discussion in email that I can't take the heat?  I am not sure but I think I just got a sunburn.

Beautiful imagery Helen.

Helen - you're so correct in that the south does leave a mark. I do miss it, and it's lifestyle. I can smell the bacon cooking on a saturday morning, and the smell of warm cornbread. You said it well in this writing.

How have you been...
