Osprey, Come Spring

They meet again in the spring
After a long winter respite
And, together, build a nest

They fend off Ravens and Seagulls
As they swoop and bombard
Teasing for baby Osprey lunch

They watch for Grayling
Swimming in the silted currents
Of Chena River running

Then dive deep into the frigid water
To pluck a fish from its swim
With talon claws reaching

They are back to hatch chicks
To fill the need to procreate
And produce strong fledglings

When snow flurries drift from the sky
They will be gone again
Until spring sun thaws icy streams

They will meet again in the spring
After a long winter respite
And, together, build a nest

So beautiful and also touching, dear Alison. Observing Nature and birds and writing about it in a poem is a wonderful gift. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Ali,  I didn¡¦t know what an osprey was, but apparently it¡¦s a bird of prey.  Thanks for the colorful description.
I missed you very much, Ali, kind of disappeared for a while and was beginning to worry.  But I¡¦m glad to know you¡¦re okay and it was just a quiet time for you.
Maybe we can talk awhile soon.
It¡¦s ferociously windy right now.

TD,

I love watching them.  I could hang out all day with them, but they don't love me as much as I do them.

Hi Jaime,

Osprey are the only birds of prey that can dive under water.  They hit the water with wings folded back and go into depths as low as 500 feet.  They are amazing.  They do all this and pull out fish.  The Osprey in the picture ignored fresh dead rabbit kill on the road below it.  They prefer fish.  They are fascinating birds.

I missed you and PiP too.  I am trying to find my way back.
