Sleep
-----

Do you know him? Your
very initmate lover
He's so close to you
and you know him
better than anybody else

Every evening he comes out
to watch over you (so to say)
You do this and that
and finally you surrender
without your senses

And he embraces you everyday
with his succour - with
the bounty to grow you
He melds you in to
the big consciousness

You should love him
and give his due
You will relish it
when you are not with him
and indulge in other loves

(People who know say this :)
You need him more
than material providence
If you ignore him
You will cease to be
in seven to ten days

Go to him everyday - see him
keep your dreams for you
He's waiting on you,
He's waiting for you,
Sleep. Your lover...

P.S.: Everybody needs sleep, some are blessed with it and some even with aids need to sleep, but sleep they must. Sleep soothes the biggest of pains and heals the greatest of wounds and greets you with a new universe every time you wake up. I tend to sleep less. Recently I was awakened to my utter sleepfulness and I gave in. I present this one for "sleep" the great companion of people.

This one really makes me think. Very deep and philosophical. I think it goes beyond sleep. Expresses something of a divine presence. Or am I reading things in? Do you really live in India? It's a country I love. I think, from your style, you must have read Tagore and some of the other spiritual Indian poets. Anyway, thanks for your comments on my work. I look forward to reading more of yours.

Whisperingwalt,

Thank you for appreciating my lines. Your words give me inspiration.

Bastet,

I am not so well read particularly in poetry. Tagore was learned from textbook. Every Indian will know Tagore since our anthem is penned by him and set to music. In my school textbooks there was a sampling from many famous poets - Milton, Tennyson, Yeats, Keats even Noyes (I am not able to quote any of them from what I learnt), but Tagore's was probably the only one in free verse. At that time, I read Tagore and thought "Is this poetry?" (but the words were powerful), and now I am writing without meter and rhyme and think "This is poetry". I appreciate that you like India. All my sensitivities belong to this land primarily though I freely dip into the world for sustenance and inspiration. Lastly I thank you for the interest in my lines.
