I haven't written poetry in two years, and I've never been too good at it.  Here's the first attempt in a while. What do ya think?

Take Flight

No longer an if, but merely a when
If not once then why not again?
According to the books hist'ry will repeat
Never disappointing, never missing a beat
So take flight hardened eagle and leave your nest
But careful how hard your wings beat your breast
All the ferocity in the world won't defend in your stead
When absent you are and a bird eyes your nest dead
A home without a guard might as well be free
A heart without your wing isn't yours to keep
The sooner you realize the better you'll fare
The chances are slim, but still you should dare
To go the distance and fight fate with fire
Don't mess with the best when the situation's dire
Through the coming hell and the torturous pain
Know that not all has been done in vain
No matter the outcome, good can be found
If another takes your nest, there's still other Ground
Stay in the air, take it all with some bend
No matter what, you'll have a happy end

I enjoyed this poem. I like the rhythm, the rhymes and the ideas behind it.

Thank you.

I'll be leaving for the Air Force Academy, hence the eagle.  My girl will be staying here in NC to go to school.  We're going to make it work through the distance and time, but couple bad news with a bad day and I end up losing a bit of that hope for the night. The end was really just to wrap it up and isn't how I feel about the whole situation. Not really a good way to do it. Haha.

Good luck. I thought you did a good job of this. Just keep the spirit flying high, and thanks for the service. May you find peace in your heart despite all the world's woes.

"We'll chase them like rats across the tundra."
