A Love Poem
For No One Special

~
If numb is a reminder
of how far acceptance
is from understanding
then I’ve accepted
that I don’t love you.

No
I don’t love you anymore
I don’t miss you
and I don’t know you -
I know now that I never did.

Somewhere along the way
we left behind
the lightness of living
and became the dullness
of scars
that breathe like stone.
I left you tears sometimes
though you never took the time
to understand what they meant.
And I only ever wanted to say
that I never loved in vain
yet you and I know
that the mind cannot make
the heart understand.

The truth is
I tried too hard
to turn this lie
into something real.
I tried
but never found your affection
anything other than arduous,
your praises shallow,
your promises reckless;
And it has become painfully obvious
that you only loved me
with the originality of a cheap romance novel.
But you were young and so was I
and our lessons learned
will become a remarkable coldness.

I don’t love you anymore
I’m not sure I ever did
then again denial is comforting
and my lesson learned
will seem like a slow disease
wanting only the familiarity of you.

No, don’t let this sadness
touch you
nothing of value is lost
neither of us truly loved with full abandon
I only thought I did
and you only wanted to.

Wow, Melissa!  I'm not much of a free verse fan, but this is one POWERFUL poem!  Holy smokes!  I am truly stunned by the similes and metaphors, and the incredible emotions that dragged this poem out of your soul.  Whew!

Tony, you've lost thru your carelessness what you could have had with a kind word and strong commitment.  I hope you read this poem and note where you could be better.

Wowsers! I felt sure by the title you were just writing a poem for Toerag and LongJohn, since you had written one for me.

Exceptional writing, m'lady. The only thing better than your rhyme is your free verse and the only thing better than your free verse is your rhyme. You have it all..

I think Tony will get the message. Too bad he didn't get it before..

I too, thought this was written for me, "no one special". lol

Really, I think this is one of your best. It truly is profound and speaks to us all that has been in love we thought, and then have the wisdom to look back on it later and realize maybe we weren't. But the experience was still something worth savoring right?

I love these lines:

I left you tears sometimes
though you never took the time
to understand what they meant.
And I only ever wanted to say
that I never loved in vain
yet you and I know
that the mind cannot make
the heart understand.

Once again, I am awed by the exceptional writing you present.  I really think you need to change your comment about becoming a "true poet." If this isn't poetry at some of its best, then what I'm writing must be pure drivel (as opposed to the tainted drivel it is).   I bow to you and yours. Peace.
