THE CRUCIFIXION REVISITED

when the sun
shut its eye
a bird entered
the cave
in his side

as the body
was taken down
another bird
abandoned
an unfinished nest
in his left armpit

three clotted splashes of blood
were washed
from his thigh --
one had formed
a perfect map
of the dark side
of the moon;
the others were outlines
of two continents
unknown
to each other

neither his eyes
nor his side
could be closed

the bird
was buried
with him
