   Granny's Old Arm Chair

Time has dulled my memories view
Of a lady tall with silver hair,
And bidding me her last adieu
She left me her old arm chair.

Made of cane, it showed it’s age
With it’s life span looking bleak,
But now as history turns the page,
It remains a genuine antique.

Life marches on, the winds of change
May blow storm clouds from above,
But long ago it did not seem strange
That she gave me her unconditional love.

Each evening ‘fore her nightly nap,
She quietly taught me how to pray,
And often took me on her lap
And gently brushed my tears away.

My youth so long ago has flown
But I can still see her sitting there,
And as my life has older grown
I treasure Grandma’s old arm chair.

What a beautiful tribute to your Grandma and the sentimentality of her old armchair.

Yo Lindsay,

This is a lovely tribute to your Grandmother. My Grandmother had her good side with rocking me to sleep too.

This was very nice.  I think most people keep treasures to remind them of loved ones.  Thanks for sharing your personal memories.

Well done, Lindsay.  Great entrance AND exit.  Both are important in a poem.

I feel the love of a special heart that blessed your young life.  I was fortunate enough to know my grandmother's love in a similar way.  I inhereited a cooking fork from her kitchen and when my mother left,  I found a picture of her sitting on the front porch with a book in her lap.  As always her dress is covered by an apron.  The picture is just a black and white snapshot, but remember her sitting there on warm summer afternoons just that way...and the joyous smile that always welcomed everyone into her humble home. Somewhere, I have the watch she is wearing in the picture, too.

You took me back, Lindsay.  Lovely poem and reminiscences! ~Karen

A very sincere thank you to Yann, Karen and Dixie, you each made a lovely comment about

Grandmas and I do appreciate it. My Gran was a very special person as I know all your Grandmas were too. God bless you all.

This is wonderful! I have my Nana's desk and my Grammy's rocker that she used to sit in when she hooked rugs.

This is one of my favorite lines from the poem:

Time has dulled my memories view

Lovely poem and tribute.  I envy you, as I envy all who were loved by anyone as a child.

Lindsay...

I'm proud to say that here I keep
rocking chairs in which eyes sweep
a tearful cheerful lovely gaze...
grandma's keep is my amaze.

She kept and kept the things that were
just to be herself assured
that round her were the rocking chairs
of those she loved; those that cared.

Now possessed of all things gifted...
my heart is mostly always lifted...
and I share my sweep with grandkids deep
knowing that all generations sweep...
