Each small thing plays a part
maybe sleeping in the corner
a speck of leaf come in with breeze
unchanged for hours and kept safe
by wall's corner and a large green vase

Could a sneeze be born from such
unnoticed piece of tree traipsed in by boot
tromped on flower petal smooched
then crushed within the pattern of an oriental rug
the color of old roses mixed with dust

So many small patterns fill a life
some touching and forever changing
what they touch like a knife gone dull
sitting in a drawer where water leaked
turning silver handle to tarnished piece

Perhaps there is no bigger answer
only little pieces that one puts together
not even a plot to move the story along
like melody to song can change or rearrange
and sometimes one small thing like a child's toy
was lost just to be found again
so it could ignite forgotten joy

Dear Martie, what a very special write! Yes, there are so many small things that travel along with us on our journey.

I am so grateful for your presence here. Your refined poetry is a joy to read.

Oh, this so makes me want to ask

what was it you suddenly found
in your hands of hands?

Hi, Martie!  Remember me, Shadow Rider?

I've always thought you were a talented bear, Martie.  Couldn't agree with you more on how little things define our most memorable moments.

There's a great Ray Bradbury story, "The Sound of Thunder", made into a movie, about how some modern day time travelers who went back to the dinosaur age to observe, and  told not to CHANGE anything, yet one guy stepped off the path, crushed a butterfly, and when they returned, everything was different in subtle ways.  It's called the 'Butterfly Effect' in scientific circles. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butterfly_effect
This poem would have been a great introductory graphic, scrolling slowly at the beginning of the film remake of the story...
Always your friend,
Jeff

It does become a tapestry, doesn't it Dear Martie? I feel your soul moving on the spirit here, the images you set forth also moving mine.  Kaleidoscopic and universal...life unfolding...

I have missed reading your poems.  It's good to be here again!

Nicole...Thanks for letting me know you enjoyed this poem

James...thank you...appreicate the read

Margherita....Have I told you how much your replies mean to me?  Lots of much!  Thank you for being so thoughtful.

Sissie Sunshine....I didn't find anything except the thought of how important small things are, especially when grappling with the big questions.  I remember with such fondness the time we spent together and the many small things we saw together.

Hi Jeff...of course I remember you!!  I've found the thought of the "butterfly effect" facinating, thanks for reminding me of it, and of you.

Karen...it's really good to see you here as well.  I don't write a poem a day like I used to but when I do, I stop by and am always happy to see old friends as well as many new poets.

Life is so like a puzzle. It so rewarding when we can put all the parts back together, if that were ever possable.

Dear Martie, I know not a more loving heart than your's. The big picture, is made up of all the small things that matter aren't they, each in their own way.

Beatiful as ever!

Dear Martie

Very touching and tenderly philosophical.

This is so good and so true!
