as a small child
from the backseat window of
my father's car
unyielding forces had met
in a tangle of dark scars on the road
the sunken eyes of
a withered man
his mangled body dangling
from the edge of
a shattered car
a faded patch of thinning
unkempt hair fails to disguise
the marble pallor of his skin
or the oddly delicate slash
resembling a crack in a time worn statue

a phone call late in the evening
a familiar voice nearly unrecognizable
an ever increasing strain,
spider-web fractures crawl outwards
a search for meaning
a terrible silence
the hurried parting
barely audible

we sit together one summer's evening
sharing memories as if
we were walking the dusty aisles of
an old museum just before closing
the golden fields and Palo Alto
are the imaginative works of an
experienced architect and like soaring towers
seen from a busy freeway
the question of an offramp when resolved merely
leads to a tangle of streets
he smiles patiently
I sneer

the bottle had fallen over
the sour smell of alcohol
had begun to fill the room
I sat alone, guilty as sin
