For Jean Sibelius

Brassy horns
Rich in harmonies
Fused with strings,
The pitch of which
Was like a siren
In the late night, or
The strident wailing
Of a mother in travail
For a fallen child!

Oh, I have heard
That Siren! I have heard
That voice!

Such is the power
Of music, to stir,
And as quickly,
To calm, as if sounds
Could smooth
The waves
Of treacherous seas!

And it can---the night
Is grown quiet;
My heart is calm . . .

The moon, hidden
Above the rainclouds,
Is still my friend . . .

On most Sunday nights, I will set aside a time for music, and very often the music will inspire a poem, as with last evening, and throughout the night of steady rainfall.

Dear Owl, I am touched by your gracious comment, and I am moved to faithfully pursue meaning in this world, through this art we all love, poetry, the queen of all languages. My day is made all the more brighter!

Thanks,

Art

I sit on my back porch somtimes, in the cool of the evening, and listen to classical music which inspires me as well, Art. This method seems to be working very well for you.

Hello Gilead, music talks to the soul in a violent, vivid and deep way, to be moved by sibelius is a grace, and the conditions too, in the night, alone, thinking to the world...Thanks for the very well crafted poem.
