When I was young, I had a crush,
...on the girl next door,
I tried and tried, to write a poem,
...to win my heart's adore.
A rhyming little ditty,
...as cute as cute can be,
To let my secret sweetheart,
...know what she meant to me.
I never wrote that poem,
...the rhyme was just not there,
And so I lost my first true love,
...the girl with light brown hair.
In my quest I was defeated,
...my poem never written,
About dear Gertrude Finkelberg,
...with whom I once was smitten.

This is very cute ... I might read it to my friend who happens to have the same beautiful name as your first love Gertrude.

Now she would be proud of you of course.

Love,

I do believe that Spring has sprung
to those of who were smitten...
to yesterdays of youthful smug
and those who now we are a'missin'!

Smitten, love-bug bitten, and tongue-tied... all perils of an unforgettable first crush!  And I am transported back to the 7th grade, when I feel head over heels for a sleepy-eyed boy named Dane.  I only got up the courage to speak to him once, to ask for a picture, and then I fled after I got it in my hot little hands.  I think I still have it somewhere among my old photos.  I wonder what became of him.

Awhile ago, I wrote one with the same title.  Thought you might enjoy it...

First Love

There once was a lady from Penniman
Who taught first grade, and then again
At Christmas I missed her, while she gained a Mister
She shattered my heart and then some.

‘Tis my story, sad but true
of the one that got away
for never would my heart beat anew
after that sad, fateful day.

No others could make my heart feel alive
for unlike some, dear friend, I was only five!
