What Truman might have said to Stalin’s ambassador In the Office of the President of the United States. January, 1946 … Mr. Ambassador, sir: If your government does not comply fully with the terms of the Yalta agreement, if you don’t stop meddling with the work of the Allied Control Commissions, the agreement, with all its clauses, will be considered to have been written on toilet paper and to immediately be null and void. We suggest that you, who have savaged, raped, brutalized and plundered captive Europe every bit as much as Hitler did, comply, so that we won’t have to flush the paper down the tank, so we won’t have to wage an atomic conflagration, so that the peoples of eastern Europe, who have suffered such barbaric and incomprehensible cruelties as a consequence of this terrible war, may, at last, live in peace, prosperity and freedom … And while he was at it, he might have kicked Degaule out of Indochina, like he kicked the Dutch out of Indonesia, and extended to the Vietnamese the blessings of self-determination and liberty promised them by the Atlantic Charter, and perhaps might have even avoided propelling Ho into the Communist orbit … And where did all the Soviets go? Just think what could have been avoided! Alas, politicians and blockheads … When will they ever learn? |
