It seemed that almost
every flower had one.
Where did they go?
All the butterflies
that danced on the wind
not so long ago.
Was it because
I was a child
that they gathered
around me
in such numbers?
I wonder.

Yo dear Ida,

The butterflies are still around.  Monarch butterflies are a migratory species.  They go from the East coast of the USA, and down to Mexico and back.  Perhaps they miss the West coast.

Ida,

I don't see them as much either.  Maybe there was a cold snap - or maybe we are not looking through our eyes with the wonder we once had.  Let's try to recapture the wonder and see if we find more butterflies.

Civilization has something to do with that, my friend...it's hard to be passionate about concrete fumes when all you eat is nectar...

If you can't plant for them, it's still possible to feed them in other ways, although feeders might also tend to attract more unsavory guests...bees and wasp, stink bugs, ants,  etc.... but give it a try.

Prepared hummingbird mix will probably work just as well, although I always make my own, even for the hummingbirds.

In early Spring - Mix 5 or 6 parts water to 1 part sugar (don't need much) in a pan, bring it to a boil just until the sugar fully disolves (water will be clear) place it in a small plastic bowl or dish and put a small sponge in it to soak up the liquid.  Set it out in the yard. Be patient and they'll come. If you want to hang it, put a little vaseline on about an inch of the hanger wire to ward off ants.

Clean and renew couple of times a week.

Wonderful use of metaphor.
Thank you for sharing this, it has reminded me of something I had forgotten from my youth.

My wife says I never listen... or something like that

Dear Ida,
I enjoyed this very much. You are a cute observer. Butterflies convey a message of lightness and beauty and that can be brought into association with youth ...
Pollution does have a role in their diminution, no doubt.
How nice Jimmy's advice!

Hoping the best for Spring!

Love,
Margherita
