Like Jonah in the belly of the whale,
Bones and other gamin and gamine
find shelter on a cold winter night
in the belly of an old, derelict,
steel boiler drum
in the corner of the scrap yard
down by the railroad tracks.

Thankfully they have enough privacy
to build a small fire in one end of the drum.
The smoke drifts out the portal
into the cold, black night.

Bobby

Love this, I remember doing things like that, Bobby. Kids don't have that kind of freedom today.

Thanks dear Ida,

I'm pleased that this poem worked for you.

If the truth were know, kids here in our poor old hood still do have such freedoms.

They are a constant source of inspiration.

Love Bobby

You succeeded in conveying the atmosphere of those days very well, dear Bobby. The strangest places get cozy when we share it with friends.

Thanks dear Passing shadows,

As you know, fires are good for keeping warm, and also cooking stuff.

I hope the poem brings back good memories for you.

Nicely done!

I've loved the notion of "the belly of the whale" as a setting for a poem for quite a while.

Thanks Wranx,

I think large dark spaces where you can't see your way, but can only hope about are important subjects.

I'm pleased it worked well for you.

A nice slice of life...Reminded me of a winter when me and my friend motorcycled up to Big Bear and it was very cold on the way up and that evening it started to snow..fortunately for us we found refuge in a small church...a door had been left unlocked, and we slept on the pews...James

Thanks James,

Churches are a good place to sleep if you don't have anywhere else.
