Here of late I tend to ponder,
On the vagaries of life.
The importance of a man’s career-
His offspring and his wife.

The way his time is wasted-
Filthy lucre lain in store…
IRA’s all drawing interest-
Shouldn’t life amount to more?

Since we have imaginations-
And propensity to dream,
Life should be more ephemeral-
Not a stolid, leaden stream.

Why is love a mere abstraction?
Why is romance a mere joke?
Why are words so often wasted-
If golden silence need be broke.

What a shame that time is fleeting-
And a life so quickly spent.
When one’s youth is far behind him,
And he wonders where it went.

Ah, for a dream that has no waking-
Such a life would be sublime…
But my heart is slowly breaking,
From the vagaries of time.

a beautiful, but sad, reflection on life. Perfect use of meter and rhyme here, good work.

Sometimes life flies by so fast we don't even see it going. All you can do is enjoy the time you have left, but not dwell on the time you lost.

I am that I am,
And that makes it me.
I float like a rock
But I sting like a bee.

Another mournful poem of youth wasted.
Yet the meat of life we've barely tasted.
And so haven't we all done it as well.
I mean we've created our own hell
And now as I enter my golden years,
I see the futility of wasted tears.
On things that mattered not a jot.
My foolish dreams that mattered not.

Done with your usual brilliant insight, John.
