The Beast

Half a man and half a beast, I wander in the fold.
Turn to face the sunrise – east, but can’t escape the cold.
A bitter heart, a windswept chill lingers long on the skin…
Seeps through all depths of good and ill to one impoverished sin.

Conscience broken, hopes grown sparse; I tread the empty path
Of dream, now nothing but a farce within the aftermath.
A tainted crease on the forehead forsakes the hidden truth,
As worry’s wretched disease spreads – chisels upon our youth.

Alone I stand, alone I’ll die, a martyr to no cause.
Ambition lost to a dry eye, and thin, measured applause.
There, take my bow with bitterness upheld in the spotlight,
Flailing in the unwillingness to stand for what is right.

Weary, worn and recklessly giving impulse the stage…
Driven on ‘er mercilessly by inert senses of rage!
The polished lie no longer stands a crown upon the head,
But an hourglass of slipping sands; each, in its own way, dead.

Where, tarnished with the impish grin of ridicule and shame,
Befalls a mark upon the skin that yet condemns the name.
Bringing the needled to the fore, forsaking all the rest,
Unsatisfied, still seeking more, the beast has his conquest!

Michael Anderson

I strike! It quivers in that heart
Which drives me to this end;
I draw and kiss the bloody dart,
My last-my only friend!

"Unsatisfied, still seeking more, the beast has his conquest!"

Let's hope it's all his own.
Man, oh man can you write!!
This is just amazing.
Very much enjoyed Michael.

Another most impressive write from you, dear Michael.

You have control over the Beast and I do hope you just released its power through your write.

Yesterday evening I watched Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" and in a way there is a connection ... LOVE is the key ...

Beautifully done Michael.  We sometimes have to stand alone, feel the pain, and do what we feel is right for the sake of our own minds.

JL, one can always hope at least.     Thank you, my friend.

Bel1e, I’m glad you enjoyed.

Margherita, Sometimes I wonder who’s in control, or if we are just what we are perceived to be… a most scary thought when it’s not beauty that’s beheld in the eye of other’s.  Great show btw.

Nicole, love maybe the key but it’s a damn scary door it opens.  Time and trust must play there part too.  Thank you.

Michael...What a mesmerising write. Toyally enjoyed, especially the final stanza

Quote:

Where, tarnished with the impish grin of ridicule and shame,
Befalls a mark upon the skin that yet condemns the name.
Bringing the needled to the fore, forsaking all the rest,
Unsatisfied, still seeking more, the beast has his conquest!

Great Ending...Paul

And yet , after what you have said..you are still master of your fate..

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
You are the master of your fate:
You are the captain of your soul.
(Paraphrased from "Invictus"--W.E.Henley)

A fine write, Michael...

Love is the opening door
Love is what we came here for
No one could offer you more
Do you know what I mean?
Have your eyes really seen?
Elton John- Love Song

Michael,
Your poem and Margherita's comment reminded me of Elton John's Love Song.

this just captivated me from the start, another wonderful write and one I most enjoyed.

It is the harmony of the universe

Paul, thank you, my friend, I’m glad you enjoyed.

Ice, indeed, it is we who decide who or what controls us.

Ms E., Never thought anything I wrote would ever be compared to Elton John… thank you.

Tracie, I’m glad you found it to your liking.

I've read this several times and each time I read it, a different part grabs my attention and holds my heart... and inspired me without me my conscious realization. *S* I think perhaps some version of the beast lives within us all... sometimes conquering the good, sometimes impersonating something tamed. *S* One thing is certain... this is a fantastic, compelling write!! *S*
