a storm came up over the city . . .

a BRIGHT flash

a LOUD crash

it echoes . . . oes . . . oes . . . oes on down the street

grumblegrumblegrumble

and rumbles back into the heavens

Whether metaphorical or not, I love thunderstorms.  Especially in the south...nothing quite like them.  No break in the thunder, just the constant rolling drums.
