Every night the reindeer
gape in the cellar window. Slenderly.
legs flicker past the lights,
hooves like cloves in soft dirt,
antlers hung like candelabra,
a matter of faith.

I can’t explain the blood---
it’s just there sometimes,
as flowers blossom inside me,
vivid Rorschachs I might come to believe in,
all’s fair, afterall---

though it will never be enough,
simply to love, no,
better to cleave the silver blade to its quiver
and bathe in the body’s hungers, as in sunlight,

for on the first day: true love sends
a shushed blue-lit hour,
and mouthfuls of mud, of Armagnac.

The sleigh is the absolute rhapsody,
the very last word in lunging
an epee plunging from a gloved fist,

cringe, the reindeer confuse weeping for wind,
acorns for bells, and croon on Christmas morn,
for something, something is begun.

THIS is mournful, delightful, fantastic writing, uh, did I say mournful? I did? Said it again. Pure poetry. Pure, PURE poetry!!!!! The pic ain't bad either for an old man's eyes.

Those words are not fair at all when you use them... but that's what I always admired in you, the little twist you give... everything.  Beautifully done, but of course you know that.

The words of this poem
leave a fine wine taste in my mouth;

Like what happens after I read
Other romantic poets..

Like the finish of Chilean Merlot
After reading Neruda.

Ice....your reply is more poetic than the poem deserves....to be compared to a fine merlot....is lovely....to be in the same sentence as Neruda? Well that's just sinful Thank you for such a generous reply, ice!

I am always so thrilled to read your poetry and find that it really consumes my thoughts.  I read this the other day - yesterday?  I don't remember when - and have been thinking of it since.  I could collect your poems very easily.  Love 'em.

Baby Girl...You say you haven't written in a while, so I just wanted to tell you you haven't lost a beat. This is some good stuff. I like you would rather write mournful instead of elation. Great read...Paul

Bewitching, mesmerising - and oh, that last stanza especially

"the reindeer confuse weeping for wind"

and

"acorns for bells"

and

"for something, something is begun."

Owl,

Again, your presence here warms me...and so you know...you are only encouraging me to further lunacy! LOL

Happy 2012!

Oh, thank goodness for that!  You know, I tried sanity for half an hour once, but it drove me insane, so I like lunacy - and I think one has to be at least a bit loony to live the highs that good poetry brings/needs for its creation.

Happy New Year to you too - and yes for the rest of the year as well!
