it is the small things;
the small things that are left between the spaces
of words and quiet conversations,
that i miss most.
how the light from a window plays
on goose-pimpled skin, or
the intimate familiarity of
the concavity between shoulder blades.
it is the paradise of strangers,
and i fear the vastness of it all;
one want leads to another, and another...
until the small things, disguise
the large things
and still, even if i spill this fire
onto a pyre of words - there is no heat
and
i still miss the small things,
the outline of a body in the cover of a duvet,
the outstretched hand.

"one want leads to another, and another..."

Amen. You have penned a longingly and achingly familiar emotion for so many, this is bound to grab its readers raw.

That's a good thing.

Dear Nicole, the missing and the lack of warmth comes through so powerfully in your words, the deep emotions perceived are the result of your high poetic performance.

and i fear the vastness of it all;
one want leads to another, and another...

But if we don't pursue satisfaction of those small things that are missed so much, we're left with the largeness of empty arms... and smoothed duvet... and a litany of "might have been"s.  *S* Excellent write... I'll keep my fingers crossed for you! *S*

Yes!
This is a beautifully expressed poem.

like the momentary lonely when the gap between extended fingers is witnessed...just before they conjoin again to be part of the hand...enjoyed the sensations here
