Winter Wonder

Winter lays her first blanket of pristine white
a comforter for next spring's miracles
a hush falls over the land
as all remain transfixed in awe
the shower of white individuality
enamors young and old
skis are waxed in anticipation
skates sharpened for the first opportunity
grills cleaned and stored away
mulch laid over bulbs planted below
wood piles grow higher in preparation
hearty soups and stews simmer once again
the popcorn tastes better by a roaring fire
than it did at the summer fair
cotton candy memories give way to anticipation
of making angels in the snow
turtle-neck sweaters and woolen mittens
hot cocoa and cinnamon toast
cozy comforters, flannel sheets, comfy blankets
brought out of storage
everything quiets and awaits
and we never tire of the wonder of it all

Marvelous word construction and plenty of setting aside the old seasons as we wait on the new. I like this one very much, Marcia.

I thoroughly enjoy winter too, it's amazing the feeling of empathy this poem evokes.

And I never tire to read your beautiful and magical words, dear Marcia.

Sighing ... for I have such a deep longing for the hush of a snow covered landscape.

Love,

Smiling at the beauty of it all...
and realizing between the lines

that I would enjoy a little
southern comfort.

Lovely write, Marcia!

Marcia, I have only once in my life encountered a freak snow which wasn't even enough to cover the ground properly.  I and 3 young friends (my first year of teaching) were going back home for the week-end and we got out of the car and had a snow fight, the 2 girls against the 2 boys.  The other girl and I were wearing slops (I believe they are known as flip-flops in the USA), so you can imagine how cold our feet were when we got back into the car, but oh, what fun we had.

Other than that, my only experience of snow is a vicarious one in reading about it, mostly here in Pip.  I feel that I know the experience very well, through your and others' descriptions.  I thank you for this beautiful and magical encounter with the silent slumber of the earth under its milk-white blanket.
