A shell
Comes in

And a
Drafted soldier
Who doesn’t
Want to be there
Gets hit in the arm

It’s a
Serious wound
And leaves
A visible scar
For the rest
Of his years

It’s a given
Badge of courage
Though in fact
He was no braver
Than a passing driver
Who gets swiped
In an accident
On his way to a bar

It serves now
To legitimize
Who he is
Which is what
He was before

A jerk
Who thinks
And acts
As if stupidity
Were a virtue

A terror before
A terror after

And I suspect
In consequence
The same thing
Is pretty much
True of women

I have to disagree
a wee bit, my friend...

for those who allowed that
they might serve
even if by draft,
for there were
those who chose to run
into harm's way

it's not quite the same
as a beer run, or a chance
visit to a tavern of choice.

Albeit, the words carry weight,
and for that, I appreciate
your poetry.
