Dirge

I watch the tide receding in
A manner I once thought brilliant.
No where to hide, pent with chagrin,
I view it now less resilient.
The rivers drawn – the souls disperse
Unto a sky implicated,
Yet linger on in misspent verse
Like a hunger never sated.

The banner flown, flitting the ledge,
The hero stands on love, undaunted…
But dies alone, acquitting pledge
Of the love nobody wanted.
Where I assume such patterned thought
To be indelibly inlaid,
But dare not presume to be fraught
By simple arguments conveyed.

Still I can’t help look to the past
In sort of timeless reverie…
Recalcitrant, scarred with a vast
View of all I could never be.
But cast not mournful glances backward,
No, steady your eyes and hold course…
While ill-timed fate’s its own reward,
You need not share in my remorse.

Still, waking to another day
In a place like this just rots your soul.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained they say,
But words alone won’t make you whole.
And as purpose pushes to the verge,
I find reflection draws me back.
If to add but one more verse ‘this dirge…
And muse over all I now lack.

YOU...just made me get a dictionary.  *splutter*

The last two stanzas are the ones that really got me.  The quiet resignation that underlies everything...

You certainly know how to make a girl feel.   (hugs)

"Still I can’t help look to the past

Excellent writing!
Love this line made a light go on, on my thinking cap.

Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. Love your neighbor as yourself.

"But words alone won’t make you whole."

No... but if ever ones could, they'd be from your pen. *S* And sometimes, some words help... even when they can't heal. *S*

This verse really resonates in my heart... both because of its sad beauty and because I'm definitely guilty of looking back and flogging myself with "if only"s... However personal the lines are, they hold a mirror to many a face. *S*

Nicole, haha, now I only owe you two trips.  Nattering... derpy... lol, are those in there?

JL, oooh, I hope to see a poem come of it... and thank you.

Ruth, yeah, I think we're both a little guilty of overflogging in my opinion.  you're right about words... they are powerful little things, very capable of helping, and even healing... even if my pen refuses to admit it.

A truly excellent write, Michael, it has a very melancholic sound, that wraps the reader in its magnetic power.
