He touched her softly with the back of his hand
with the soft current of his lashes
brushing up against her brown bangs

She lied about her age that night
like the cold feet that walk down the isle of the altar
hand in hand

At the edge of her knees
as the town began to simmer
with their lights like roman candles beckoning from the chandeliers
That wielded from east to west

As her legs began to shake
slightly below her kneecap
like the chasm between childhood and where she stood now

She placed her open hands on his chest
his wool, black coat
as if she could feel his heart under the sights of the sky
where the canals of water opened to a dawn of frost

Her soft eyes
never could lie.
