I chanced upon a book
in an out-of-the-way bookstore.
It looked old and forgotten,
used as a window prop.
I gingerly took the volume,
placed another book in its place.

The tome was so old the title
was unreadable on its cracked
and fragile cover. Sitting alone
in the corner of the bookstore
I opened this treasure to its
title page.

It creaked and groaned in its
fashion, and the title of the book
This is About You and Your Love.
What a strange title, I mused, and
turned another page to Chapter 1.
But there was no such chapter.

The pages had an odor so strong
I sneezed, and then again.
My eyes were looking at the page,
unbelieving at what they did see.
You had to have been there,
to witness my astonishment.

The words which I read on that
first page, I still have trouble
believing; were to my shock my
very own name. My hands shook,
my heart felt as if it would burst.

Love came to town when you met her,
From then til now, life's been a blur.
One look at her, you were beguiled,
You were smitten by that first smile.

I sat there, the room whirling 'round,
staring at the dusty pages I'd found.
No mistaken the words I’d read
were for me and me alone. But how
could that possibly be? I allowed my
eyes again to focus upon the words.

This woman was sent just for you,
She's your soul mate, yes, that is true.
Give unto her all that you can,
She will do the same, that's the plan.

My mouth was dry, I needed to pee,
but I couldn't move from that chair.
Had I been sent off to Twilight Zone?
Was I dreaming, I mean what the hell?
This strange book had me spellbound,
and it was about us, how could that be?

Foolish man; and you have been a fool,
you've been hard-headed like a mule.
Just take what you have been sent,
And smell the letters and their scent.

What the hell, the book talks back at me.
I shut the damn thing with a thud;
it opened up just like before. Another
page was staring at me. I closed my eyes
afraid I was going around the bend, and
I swear upon my life, it spoke again.

Calm down my son, and listen up,
your eyes are wide like a lost pup.
Can't you understand what she is?
Come on now, this is no pop quiz.

"Damn you," I screamed at the page
"who are you to tell me about her?
I know what I've got, I know that better
than you. You're just a book." I was
sweating, my hands were hurting from
gripping the thing I could not turn loose

I want to tell you how she feels,
But you're upset, let's make a deal.
Take me home with you and we'll talk,
Pay for me and let's take a walk.

Like a voodoo zombie I did as asked,
I've walked all night, it's almost dawn.
The book is in my hip pocket, and it
feels warm, as if it were a living, breathing
thing. Maybe it is, I don't know, I don't
want to go home and find out.

Jerry you are my friend, but you are a cliff hangin' son of a gun, you know that? There better be another one after this or I hope that book bites you in your back pocket!

Jerry you are a great story teller.
This is a great read, really enjoyed.

Captivating write!

I'm sure I would have said more, but I started laughing at Lori's response and lost my train of thought. LOL

Yes, suthern, Lori can just be downright mean sometimes, huh? Thank you for reading my poem, and liking it.
