Cycles

And here I stand, declare! – demand! – While all about rings hollow,
Habitual, deemed ritual, as all set out to follow
Loveliness lost, the diremost cost of inane retribution,
A right but mine, do not decline me this swift execution!

I face you all, a splintered man, for no justice will find me.
The curse my own, to bear alone – your eyes simply remind me.
My greatest deeds, forgotten seeds of yesterday’s expression;
Tantamount, they but amount to this day’s indiscretion.

And there, in hell, I’ll ring the knell, to see her set before me…
To face the dead, and share the dread memory traces for me.
The life I stole, but yet extol – the maiden I once carried…
Who yet walks on, a shade, withdrawn, by me as I am buried.

Tomorrow sold, while sorrow folds the face in quiet setting.
I close my eyes to realize, in truth, there’s no forgetting.
Eternity in hell, I see justice slowly amassing…
In smile, in death, in newfound breath, repeated with each passing.

Michael Anderson

I could not love except where Death
Was mingling his with Beauty’s breath —
Or Hymen, Time, and Destiny
Were stalking between her and me

A decade or so ago, I posted a piece with a similar name... but there's where similarities cease... for mine was a few staccato syllables while this is sheer genius!

I could weep with the beauty of your rhyme... do weep with the melancholy conveyed by that perfection.

quote:

And here I stand, declare! – demand! – While all about rings hollow,
Habitual, deemed ritual, as all set out to follow
Loveliness lost, the diremost cost of inane retribution,
A right but mine, do not decline me this swift execution!

I can't imagine finer verse!

I don't know, Michael, in my opinion this poem is par for the course for you and your considerable talent. I think most, if not all, of your verse is incredible.
