Urban Serenade

Well the night is hollow and warm
yeah lost somewhere in that swarm
little angels mixed up in firefights
scatter trails off into this misty night
me I'm on a downtown train runnin' lightning off the rails
looking for that little girl to blow heaven into my sails

And it's fourth of July
all the colors burst in the sky
over this dead city comin' back alive
dancin' on the edge of knife
dancin' for you fragile life
groovin' till half past dawn
watch them corvettes ride
until they're finally gone
I'll sing out my wounded pride
in an urban serenade song

A symphony of sympathy plays
yeah devil girls killin' you in a gaze
got the boys mixed up and confused
eyes gotcha all battered and bruised
me I'm on a mission headin' into a storm of guitar chords
searching for that little girl to rattle all my floorboards

Yeah it's fourth of July
all the kids just wanna get high
and this zombie city stalkin' me tonight
danglin' from a streetlight
bangin' out a guitar bite
oozin' till half past noon
watch them pretty girls smile
bright white as a full moon
I'll sing out my ragged style
in this urban serenade tune

Hey darlin' wontcha say you'll be there in a pinch
eyes water, hair asunder, I feel my mouth clinch
ready for the sock in the jaw
huh like I really care at all
anyway I'll still keep on carryin' on
like a screechin' stray cat
garbage cans spilled out on the lawn
hey you know where it's at
singin' the blues, the jazzy groove,
urban serenade song

Rumblin' hearts on the line
out there you'll find a highway sign
between the cops and the borderline
you know they shoot me down every time
but tonight it's gonna work out fine
hey it's gonna hurt just fine

So whaddya say twist o' fate
are ya gonna let me keep that date
with the crazy girl from the promised land
let her hold my hopes in the palm of her hand
and when the night gets too cold to run away
let the moon shine on our lil' carnival in decay

Hey city,
stay pretty,
let that crazy girl keep by my side
come hell or high water
in a broken down carousel ride
let lost sons and daughters
get found up and down the strand
the right time, right place to make their final stand
they're out there chasing shadows
on the frozen turnpike tonight
angels wrapped in ribbons n' bows
dancin' in and out of the light
dancin' away my midnight fright
of losin' until everyone's gone
of cryin' out this serenade song
but I know it's gonna be alright
yeah it's alright
hey it's alright
yeah it's all alright
feelin' outta site
and all the words that I write
hey darlin' I write 'em for you
so baby let's groove till half past dawn
play them blues, that jazzy ol' groove
my urban serenade song

Yeah it's fourth of July
all the colors crown the sky
over this dead city comin' back to life
dancin' 'cross the edge of life
dancin' happy husband and wife
groovin' from dusk till dawn
watch that ol' highway run
until we're finally gone
I'll sing out my ragged lungs
that sweet summertime shade song
my urban serenade song
