Shadows

Shadow lingers in the musky,
Dank, dark realms sun dares not invade.
The face of hell, a woeful plea
On the lips of a passing shade.
A silhouette on twilight, dim,
Beneath a tree of barren branches;
As the shade turns, I see I’m him
And realize I’m out of chances.

I watch paralyzed, ambition
Still recognized, but heeded not…
Every dream and inclination,
Alas, dead on the floor, forgot.
And still yet cracks within the blinds
Reveal the light of hope beyond,
That twists a mind that never minds
With the simple wish to abscond.

Heart swinging on ambivalence,
I ride the mocking pendulum –
The ever tick-tocking suspense
That beats like a funeral drum.
I follow him unto the dwelling,
As he glides cleanly through the door.
The mystery inside compelling
Me ever to attempt encore.

Life bled away on dream, my fate.
Truth chanced away, I still recall
That hunger I could never sate –
I reach the door, but face a wall.
Alas, a door I’ll never open,
I hear the happiness within –
Feel the agony in me sharpen
With every cursed remembered “when”.

And so I turn, and so I run
As far – as fast as a man will.
But still I burn in midnight’s sun
These feelings I can’t help but feel.
In darkness, scream a frightening wail
That echoes down the blighted path;
Till at last Silence draws its veil,
And renders me the aftermath.

Fallacy spent, reality
Disappears with sanction of day.
A complete dark surrounding me,
Where even shadow would not play.
With every last glimmer that dared
Shine hope on me, pointless and void;
I recognize my sin, I cared,
And in that pain die overjoyed.

Till even that wanes in the loam,
As I make my way to the glade…
So far from that accursed home,
And all the love in me unbade.
A specter of the man I was –
Face tomorrow with a dry smile.
Haunt all I touch this damned ghoul does,
That eternity be my trial.

Condemned by the eyes of the living,
And unaccepted by the dead;
In a world I’ll never find forgiving,
All I love I bring to dread.
The sticky marsh, alas my setting,
A fitting place for me to dwell.
Forgotten but never forgetting,
I ride the pendulums of hell.

Michael Anderson

I could not love except where Death
Was mingling his with Beauty’s breath —
Or Hymen, Time, and Destiny
Were stalking between her and me

"As the shade turns, I see I’m him
And realize I’m out of chances."

A desperate emotional and dark place to be.
Excellent write top to bottom.

I could have copied any verse... for each and every one grips my heart and takes my breath. Some, like the last, are poems in and of themselves.... but they merge into amazing perfection. This is so very superb, Michael... ((((HUGS))))

See, and here I have a friend
who thinks much like you, and he
believes it is true
that sunshine can break through
if not always, enough so
that this simple fact remains...
there is reason
to continue
until you can't.

Thanks for letting this sun
peek in, Michael.

You write dark so well...
that it makes me afraid for you.

Michael,
..Surfing shadows now and then
is something we must do;
don't stop and put your feet down,
cause you see, we're passing through.

Lori, all hugs accepted.

JL, Ruth, thank you.  Glad you enjoyed.

K, you have always been a source of light, even in my darkest times.  I’m the one who should be thanking you.

Dixie, good to see you!  You’re right of course, all shadows pass… some just do so more extravagantly than others.

Karl, nice little nugget of wisdom that… I’ll try not to be grounded.

Thank you all,

Michael
