When She Loved Me

When she loved me we took walks.
Hand in hand we looked at stars,
spoke of babies,
held moonlight in our eyes,
traded hearts and smiles,
stopped being two - became one.

But it was a lie,
a silly game that children do,
young hearts playing at love,
being mommy and daddy,
dreaming silly dreams,
saying foolish words about things
never meant to be.

When we loved again,
childhood fantasies were gone,
starlight was replaced by reality,
babies cried in the middle of the night,
two hearts argued about whose turn it was -
and somewhere we stopped being one,
became two.

When she loved me,
we took walks hand in hand,
wished on stars,
lit the moon,
and I loved her,
yes, I loved her,
and I want us to be one again.

When she loved me next
the children were gone,
our hair turned gray,
our skin lost its youth,
age showed in our smiles,
but somewhere, we stopped being two,
became one,
took moonlight walks,
hand in hand,
speaking of babies grown,
grandchildren coming,
traded hearts and smiles,
were young again.

When she loves me,
as I love her,
there could never be an end
to the dreams we dream,
the things we see,
the words we share -
and I love her,
as she loves me,
and whisper lovers' words
only we can hear,
as we lay there
in the end of years,
remembering the life we've shared.

When she loves me - Oh,
when she loves me. . .
I love her
so much more.

Sounds to me like you both fought the good fight and surmounted the obstacles that many people cave into and wash their hands of the whole damn thing. That is the way is used to be, and it still is to an extent, but far too many give up when the fairytale they thought they were in became reality . . . What a shock.

I'm keeping this one, because it is a keeper.

Wow... this is remarkable.  For someone as myself, it tells me it's ok to still love someone who doesn't love me anymore.  I think I needed to hear that.

The ending was powerful... brought a smile to my lips.  You are blessed.

**Thanks to all for the read and comments...

**Michael...I still love my junior high/high school sweetheart as much as I ever did and she gave me up 53 years ago.

You NEVER have to stop loving them: you just have to go on without them and love their memory (which "grew" you in one way or another) while loving someone else in reality.

Dear Jimmy, this really touches my heart profoundly. A wonderful reality write, where love and wisdom are equally lived and honored.

Sniff sniff ... It is poignant to that point!

Ah my friend, you have penned a treasure here.  Words I hope you have whispered to your wife on one of your moon-lit walks.
Very nice J.

I am so glad that your daughter found this, Jimmy.  What a wonderful poem to read about her parents and to share with us.

Thank you to you both.

Jim, that was one of the most beautiful love poems that I have ever read.
It actually brought tears to my eyes.
You and your wife are both blessed.

Wishing you continued happiness together as one...
