Today, on my way to my friend’s house ...

I passed the building
where your windows are not yours anymore
but the habit of decades is a strong one
so I still look up automatically.
Are they open? Is there light? Are you at home?
No, no light and your steps ring elsewhere now.

Do you remember?
Down there in your courtyard
you tried to teach me to ride your motor-bike,
as my car had been stolen and I went by bus.
You said I would save time ... precious time!
You wanted no one to see us or to hear us,
but how I shrieked in terror
when it felt like I was sitting on a missile
and couldn’t brake the monster in time!
Stop ... you shouted while running behind
rescuing me just before a sure disaster.
Try again, try again, once more, come on!
By that time it seemed the whole neighbourhood
was on alert and either watched from the windows
or stopped by the fence. Basta! You said.
You can do it, you said. No I can’t, I tell you!
You looked so disappointed
that I promised to take a further lesson,
but far away outside the town,
where there were no walls
and no neighbours to embarrass me.

I was smiling.

Then we ran just out of sight like so many times
to surrender to one of our giggling sessions.
Healing giggling sessions I called them.
Oh, how we could laugh together for nothing
and everything. How I miss you!
Where are you? What are you doing ?
Do you miss me too?
And which songs are you singing now
of the thousands stored within your heart?

Once you called and recited one of my poems,
I was spellbound by the magic of your voice.
After the last words there was such a silence,
neither you nor I could speak.
After a long while you softly whispered
that we had failed to live the life we wanted to live.
It’s all right, we can’t change the past, I said.
Feelings are never expressed in vain.
Even then we dried each other’s tears
to burst once again into giggles,
promptly healing the moment’s pain.

I smiled and I cried.

Suddenly I found myself at the door
of my friend, without even knowing
how I had arrived, as I was blind
with you on my mind!
Didn’t miss the goal though!
I must have had  an absent-minded look
and an enigmatic smile
as she asked if I was fine.
I am I am, just for a moment in time
I was distracted, never mind!

I smiled ...

I had walked with you on my mind ...
and still I wonder,
with a final sigh,
why, oh why, why?

Oh, Margherita, this is sooooooo beautiful.  The tears are running down my face - not just at its sadness, but at its happiness and its beauty.  Thank you for this masterpiece!

Thank you, sweet Owl, for reading all the length through and for feeling its sadness as well as its happiness. Indeed ... oh gosh ... no, I don't want to cry ....

He was a highlight in my life.

"Reading all the length through" was the easiest thing in the world, Margherita.  NOT reading it all would have been difficult - I was spellbound all the way through.

Oh, to know that he was the love of your life - oh, my goodness - I am glad I didn't know that the first time I read it - I would have cried all the more.

Don't say you aren't going to cry - it is good for you - let the tears flow - you will feel all the better for it.

Thank you, dear JL, for detecting magic in this write!

Thank you once again, dear Owl, for your loving heart, always wide open to embrace the world and your friends with such deep empathy. The best crying is when we can combine it with smiles of gratitude anyway!

Dear Ida, I felt such joy in reading your loving comment. Thank you so much.

Thank you, dear Kat, for your loving kindness, yes, and there are many more unforgettable moments I could write about, if I will be given the time. To write of memories isn't so bad, even if it reveals that we are not teenagers.

Thank you, dear Jimmy, for enjoying the read and the walk! So nice to find you here.

Love and enjoy a wonderful Sunday all!

I think this will surely resonate with everyone who's lost a special closeness to time, distance or circumstance... and isn't that all of us? *S* I believe they hear our thoughts and know our missing... and share it. Beautiful write, dear lady!

Dear Margy,

this was soo different from your usual writing. It was like reading a special conversation you had, more prose, then poetry. I loved it.

"Feelings are never expressed in vain.
Even then we dried each other’s tears
to burst once again into giggles,
promptly healing the moment’s pain.

I smiled and I cried.

I had walked with you on my mind ...
and still I wonder,
with a final sigh,
why, oh why, why?"

Brill!

Dear Margherita,

"we had failed to live the life we wanted...
  healing the moment's pain"

As you have shown us in the past , there is always time to experience life's pains and pleasures through laughter with a great friend,

Love it...this happens to me sometimes, only most of the time the scene is mental.

This is shorter than me, as the reader would like to see it..Perhaps there is a longer story in it, with more details...though it (the topic) does stand alone very well as a poem.

Thank you so much, dear Ruth, for your most kind and warm reply.

Dear Richy, I enjoyed your comment, thank you so much. A little different yes, but still about my favorite topic ... and these are memories and I don't dislike it when they surface, even though they might cause a few tears.

Yes, dear Ebonygirl, precious are those great friends indeed. Thank you so much for your kindness in replying.

Dear Ford, you are so right! There could be a book for sure! But this memory couldn't expand into more, as the thoughts were interrupted Thank you so much, I much enjoyed your comment.

Love,
Margherita

This brought tears to my eyes I have felt this long ago, but it's a lost memory. Only thing left is the feeling, truly enjoyable read.

Margherita: evocative and heartwarming (albeit bittersweet). Thanks for being a time machine back to the memories of a loved one!
