"Let's all be brave." says Mr Politician. Don't let the terrorist accomplish their mission. Go out into the streets and the crowded arenas. Have no fear. We're not really sure there are terrorists here. We think there might be a few roaming around but what's to fear if they can't be found? I appreciate your advice. You have expressed your thoughts very efficiently, dear Ida. Mr. Politician is talking primarily to himself no doubt, being a favorite target as all politicians, who often need to be in front of or in midst of crowds ... They are the target whether they fear or fear not (Gandhi most assuredly didn't have any fear!). Fear of course makes us cautious, which is always necessary to a certain degree. But fear in its purest meaning, when we visualize negative events to befall us, is dangerous. I am disgressing and the theme is complex. But ... thoughts materialize, because they are energy. So we rather be cautious about our thoughts. Love and peace. Margherita |

Politicians start wars, and then they want to use wooden spoons and rubber gloves and because they are all blind they want to wear the darkest of sunglasses. I was watching the news and thinking that I don't have a bunker under my house (like the one underneath the White House) to hide in in case of an attack and I really don't care to present myself as a target. |

Firstly giggles at the humour you put into this, Ida. I love your poem and the seriousness and lightheartedness you blended in it. Secondly, I realise that your poem is about a very particular issue, but I would just like to make a comment about people's perceptions of politicians which has nothing to do with your poem, but about people’s general opinion of politicians, as suggested by some comments above – but not intended to attack you or the other people who made them at all. Smiles to all of you. I hope my reply won’t be deleted for not being relevant. What follows is not heated at all. It is said as I would say, “I bought a loaf of bread today.” It is not intended to spark a political debate, heated or otherwise. My point is merely that unless one knows all politicians, one isn't in a position to make general sweeping statements, and that not all politicians are bad (though I agree, many, many are). My point in the following is merely to illustrate my previous sentence. I know 5 (after just a moment's reflection – I could probably come up with far more if I took a little more time) of whom I can vouch for the integrity, and deep desire (and success in achieving that desire) to serve and untiring and relatively thankless (except by some) work in long, long hours - 2 on the bottom rung of the ladder and 3 at the top, my son and his wife and Helen Zille (pronounced Zilla), the leader of the Democratic Alliance, Lindiwe Mazibuko, the Democratic Alliance Party Spokesperson and Shadow Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform, and Past-President Nelson Mandela. The Democratic Alliance is the official opposition party in South Africa. I don’t know Helen and Lindiwe personally, but my daughter-in-law does and has met and spoken with them many times and they know her and I have heard a lot about them from my daughter-in-law, besides what I have seen for myself. My point in the following is to show that it is not about party politics that I am saying what I have said. I don’t know too much about Kgalema Motlanthe, the Deputy President of South Africa, but I have been very impressed by what he stands for on a number of occasions, and not on some other occasions. I wish that he had been made president of the country instead of Jacob Zuma, for whom I have very little respect indeed. Kgalema Motlanthe was President in more or less an Acting President capacity between the presidency of Thabu Mbeki and Jacob Zuma. I admired a number things about President Thabu Mbeki, and some things not. And yes politicians can make mistakes, and yes they shouldn’t because they are far-reaching, and yes, many, many, many politicians are in it only for the money and the power, but let any one of us who can do a better job than the best politicians stand up and take their place. And of course it is right and proper to criticise politicians individually for their individual mistakes. All I am saying is that not all politicians (and for that matter car salesmen and realty/estate agents – I was an estate agent and I don’t think I am bad) are bad, though many, many are. Please, please folks, do not turn this into a heated (or otherwise) political debate. One, two, three, say CHEESE and SMILE. Owl |

Dear Ida, you have offended absolutely no-one! You have written a very thought provoking poem and your feelings are very much understandable under the circumstances. And let's pray that there may be wise leaders to save this world from further chaos. As you say, there must be a few somewhere whose voice will ring according to our hearts! ... if ever they make it to the top, that's the problem! Owl, No offense. No feelings hurt on my part. I'm an American, proud, and sometimes I voice my opinions because that is just what most Americans do, especially if we smell a scoundrel in a political office. The people in the USA are the government. We are to rule politicians, not be ruled by them. Didn't mean to sound rough or mean, that's just the way it is here. JL |
